The Original John Hinde Prints
The story of JOHN HINDE, the Collection and the Archive

The JOHN HINDE Collection
We are John Hinde Collection – we run this John Hinde postcard archive, restore and sell edition prints of the original transparencies. We are the only restorers of John Hinde’s work.
Our ambition and aim for the legacy of this project was to help cement John Hinde’s reputation as an important figure in the history of colour photography, not as a brand. His work is now held in the Tate Gallery’s permanent collection.
The JOHN HINDE prints
These original prints, which are restored to exhibition quality, are not available anywhere except this website and The Photographers’ Gallery Print Sales in London.
A selection of prints were launched at Vintage Festival at The South Bank in London in July 2011. Since then they have been exhibited internationally.

The JOHN HINDE Story
John Hinde was a seasoned photographer before he started his postcard company. He was taking and developing his own film in the 1930s and he published many photography books in the 1940s.
DID YOU KNOW?
What isn’t well documented is that he planned to emigrate to USA. He sailed from Liverpool for America in 1949 where he made a series of 16mm “American Movie Shows”, which he showed in village halls on the west coast of Ireland. He also “undertook research into outlets for colour photos of Britain and Ireland by visiting publishing organisations in Washington, Philadelphia and Chicago”.
The John Hinde physical Archive and estate is owned by the Royal Photographic Society and is held at V&A in London.
